@James – Good point. It looks they are willing to accommodate an exercise of the right to fly without ID. I do still think it appears that they would prefer that those who choose not to show ID just lie and say that they lost their ID.
Interesting questions remain about:
- How to “assist transportation security officers in ascertaining [your] identity”
- Whether they expect to keep any terrorist out of the airport this way. (Can you imagine a terrorist that would be unwilling to lie/procure fake ID?)

It looks to me like it’s the willful refusal to show ID that’s the main target here. Compliance, not safety, seems to be the goal.

Interesting comment on the article:

"Passengers who refuse to show ID, citing the rights" still will be accommodated if they "assist transportation security officers in ascertaining their identity." . This is similar to the Fourth Amendment case law on ID, which is also widely misunderstood by the lay public. You have every right not to carry ID, but you do not have the right to withhold your identity from law enforcement if they have a legitimate reason for knowing it (e.g., because you've been lawfully arrested).
